CNN —A team of rescuers are working to save an orca calf that has been stranded for nearly two weeks in a remote lagoon on Vancouver Island, off the west coast of Canada. Cottrell explained crews have tried multiple methods to get the calf to leave the lagoon on its own, including “acoustic playbacks” – playing the sounds of other orca whales. Moving the orca calf “will require a lot of patience as well as cooperation from the whale,” Bay Cetology added. This isn’t the first time officials in Canada have strategized to rescue a solitary and stranded orca calf. In 2002, an orca calf who came to be named Springer was spotted alone in Puget Sound, prompting an extensive capture and relocation effort.

The nearly week-old United Auto Workers strike against Ford (F.N), General Motors (GM.N) and Stellantis (STLAM.MI) is viewed as a signal of the strength of the U.S. labor movement that has garnered national support from Americans. The UAW members from two striking plants gathered in Toledo were rolling out for the one-hour, 45-mile (72 km) drive to Wayne, Michigan, where Ford workers also walked off the job last week. In Michigan, Ohio and Missouri, the three states where workers are currently striking, models made by the Big Three dominate the leaderboard of new auto registrations. The United States is still the second-largest car market in the world, trailing only China. Union membership has fallen steadily over several decades in the United States.

CHICAGO (AP) — Like so many tennis fans around the world, Nathan Willett was captivated by Carlos Alcaraz's five-set victory over Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final this summer. Only Willett was on the road with the Cold War Kids, opening for Tears for Fears on a North America tour. There are 30 more dates on his schedule after Cold War Kids announced a tour on Tuesday in support of its self-titled 10th album — 12 songs that touch on everything from breaking up with a therapist to gender norms to confronting a toxic past. After releasing a trilogy of albums over three straight years and mulling over a more dramatic departure from the band's indie rock sound, Willett said Cold War Kids' new music is more about what it does best — leading to the eponymous title. It was a suggestion by his wife, Kristina Dahlin, who thought he needed a new hobby while Cold War Kids was off the road for a while.

Three-quarters of Americans, or 76%, favor allowing the federal health care program for the elderly to negotiate prices for certain prescription drugs. Americans are split on how Biden is handling the issue of prescription drug prices — 48% approve, making it a relative strong point for Biden, but 50% disapprove. Even among the Americans who support allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices, approval of Biden’s handling of the issue remains relatively tepid. Aerial view of the LNG storage and vaporization vessel "Höegh Esperanza" at the Wilhelmshaven LNG terminal. European gas markets have been constantly fluctuating in recent months, owing to extreme heat, maintenance at gas plants and, most recently, industrial action at major liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities in Australia. "Gas markets are becoming riskier — gas and LNG prices are increasingly volatile and greatly affected by global factors," Jaller-Makarewicz said. The EU reached its target of filling gas storage facilities to a 90% capacity roughly 2 1/2 months ahead of its Nov. 1 deadline. It means that we've got a pretty good buffer," Malek said, referring to Europe's filling of its gas storage facilities.

CNN —Anti-corruption candidate Bernardo Arévalo, from the progressive Movimiento Semilla party, appeared to have won Guatemala’s presidential election on Sunday, beating former first lady Sandra Torres in a race marred by fears of democratic backsliding. With more than 95% of the ballots counted, Arévalo won 59.1% of the vote compared to Torres’ 36.1%, according to official data from the Supreme Electoral Tribunal. A voter casts their ballot at a polling station during the presidential run-off election in Guatemala City, Guatemala, on August 20, 2023. Prosecutors and judges associated with the commission were arrested and investigated and many have since fled the country. “Tonight, at least, the fire has behaved and the weather has behaved normally,” Fernando Clavijo, the regional president for the Canary Islands, told reporters on Friday, adding that firefighters had worked intensely to stop the fire’s progress after it moved in an unpredictable manner earlier in the week. Mr. Clavijo said he was hopeful that the forecast would improve, but added that the blaze still was not under control. At least eight municipalities have been affected by the fire, though local authorities on Friday lifted the lockdown order on La Esperanza, a village northeast of Teide National Park, where 3,820 residents had been ordered earlier in the week to shelter in place. The priority on Friday, Mr. Clavijo said, was to confine the fire to an area near the village. For residents closest to the fire, the past few days have been marked by streams of choking smoke and an overcast sky with an orange glow that has been filled with falling ash.

Lawmakers had summoned Health Minister Rosa Gutierrez to face a motion to remove her from her post before she said she would resign. President Dina Boluarte accepted the resignation and vowed to "redouble" efforts to improve public health in a post on Twitter. Over the past week, deaths are up 24%, as cases jumped by more than 12%. Last week, Boluarte declared a two-month state of emergency in most regions of the country, while most of the fatalities so far have occurred in northern Peru.

The first, CALLING THE MOON: 16 Period Stories From BIPOC Authors (Candlewick, 368 pp., $22.99, ages 10 and up), is an anthology of short stories and prose poems. The title “Calling the Moon” is a reference to menstruation, which usually happens once a month and which some of the anthology’s characters call a moon or luna. Many of the young characters are quick-thinking, improvising ways to handle an unexpected emergence of blood, including the wadding up of pieces of toilet paper as a method of absorption. But I blanched at her use of the word “menstruators” to encompass people who have periods but don’t identify as female. I have to think that we can come up with something else, maybe simply “people who have periods.”

The April meeting of G7 climate ministers eventually agreed, despite tussles between Japan and European nations, that gas investments "can be appropriate to help address potential market shortfalls" following Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the disruption it has caused in global energy markets. Saturday's G7 leaders statement at their summit in Japan's Hiroshima changed the language - eventually formulated by Germany, sources say - to include gas investments again, with the G7 saying it was "necessary to accelerate the phase-out of our dependency on Russian energy". DEFENDING THE STANCEGerman government officials rejected that criticism, saying investments are needed to get away from Russian gas and find a replacement. The G7 pledged to achieve a net-zero emissions goal by 2050 and to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Max Lawson, head of inequality policy at activist group Oxfam, said the G7 had maintained a loophole for new fossil gas investments using the Russian military conflict with Ukraine "as an excuse."
But there are signs of change, with seven female candidates out of 26 this time around. Nunez is the vice presidential candidate for the main opposition coalition, hoping to unseat the ruling Colorado Party. The more right-wing Colorado party has also approved gender parity plans for the cabinet, though two men are on its ticket. Some women are worried that may work against female candidates, who often contend with having less political apparatus and campaign funding. "By insisting on gender parity, it opens up the debate further," Martinez said.

The 40,000-capacity Terrorism Confinement Center was inaugurated on Tuesday to help relieve some of the overpopulation in the country's prison system. With nearly two percent of its adult population behind bars, El Salvador has the highest incarceration rate in the world. El Salvador's largest prison, La Esperanza, currently holds 33,000 people despite having a capacity of 10,000. By 2021, El Salvador's prison system had 20 penal centers with a capacity for 30,000 holding 35,976 prisoners.
The aim is to shield European households and businesses from the kind of gas price spikes experienced since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. WHY CAP GAS PRICES? Gas prices have eased in recent months as the EU agreed some emergency measures, including obligations to fill gas storage, but they remain high. The EU price cap would not drop below 180 eur/MWh, even if the LNG price fell to far lower levels. The EU price cap is designed to be a temporary fix that would apply for one year.
The 90 kilotonne Hoegh Esperanza, a shipborne regasification terminal, will in future be able to supply enough gas for 50,000 households for a year. Further floating liquid natural gas terminals will follow. Germany hopes to have 30 billion cubic metres of import capacity by the end of next year. Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February left Germany, which for decades prospered from plentiful piped Russian gas, looking for alternative sources of energy once it had decided it did not wish to help finance Moscow's war. "The speed with which we built this should be a model for future infrastructure build-outs," Scholz said.
